Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against most strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
- Inhibits protein synthesis by interacting with the 50S portion of the 70S ribosome
- At higher concentrations can inhibit DNA synthesis
Bacteriostatic and inhibiting protein synthesis. Water-soluble, but not as stable in aqueous solutions and more susceptible to hydrolysis by UV light.
